Address racial wealth divide still present in America.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen spoke on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day about how Dr. King’s vision has impacted America’s economy. She referenced his 1963 speech “I Have A Dream,” in which he used the analogy of a bad check to describe how the nation had been unjust in dealing with black Americans. The treasury secretary highlighted ways her department has been addressing the imbalance.
Secretary Yellen said, “Of course, no one program and no one administration can make good on the hopes and aspirations that Dr. King had for our country.” She added. “There is still much more work Treasury needs to do to narrow the racial wealth divide. We also know that progress requires a constellation of actors across generations, in and out of government.”
